Winging It With Dragons: Behind the Scenes of Book 4

Confession time: I’m only three chapters into Book 4 of the Dragon’s Oath series… and already, the story is taking some unexpected turns.

I started with an outline—I still have it open, in fact. It’s kind of like my GPS: always there to guide me, remind me of key destinations, and make sure I don’t completely miss the big picture. But as any pantser-at-heart knows, sometimes the scenic route calls. And lately, I’ve been taking a few detours.

One of the biggest changes I’ve made so far? Tozet, the goldenhorn dragon, has stepped into back into the narrative. Unexpected, but the perfect fit. If you’ve read Drake Ascendant (Dragon's Oath Book 1), you’ll remember Tozet as Jurom’s mate, but now she’s right here beside Frulin Sweetmeadow (from books 2 and 3). And let me tell you, she’s making her presence known in the best possible way. Her bond with Frulin is growing quickly, and their connection is full of mystery, wisdom, and that ancient dragon magic that breathes life into the world of Dragon’s Oath.

Originally, I'd planned a Thornose dragon for the role Tozet took over. Once Tozet showed up, it was clear I had to move her story forward. The more she and Frulin interact, the more I realize just how essential Tozet is to Frulin’s destiny—and the unfolding mystery of the red dragon.

It’s been a delicate balancing act. I’m still working with the outline as a guide, but I’ve been shifting and condensing parts of the plot as the story reveals itself. Characters are arriving sooner than I expected, some scenes are merging, and the pacing is evolving in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

But that’s the fun of writing. It’s messy. It’s a little chaotic. And it’s a blast.

Tozet’s arrival is one of those wonderful surprises that only happens when you give a story room to breathe. And it’s shaping up to be an exciting part of Book 4.

Thanks for coming along on the journey—chaotic creativity and all. I’ll be sure to keep you updated as the story continues to unfold!
