I'm writing a series of time travel fantasy books. To introduce the story, we have to travel to the past where the story started as an inkling. I won’t tell you what that inkling was to avoid spoilers but it involved a couple of kids being hidden, a dragon, and a woman. That first scene was a seed that captured my interest. I wanted to know more.

The creative process urged me to dig deeper. I needed to explore events before this first scene to understand the kids' plight. I wrote more to discover why they were in that moment, and what role the dragon played. But to share more would give away too much, so I’ll leave the mysteries in place. My journey for answers carried me back four books worth of stories to learn the Drake Ascendants' history.  And you'll find that first inkling scene in book 5 of the Dragon’s Oath series once it is written.

The Time Travel Elements

The Dragon's Oath Series has four methods of time travel:

The Labyrinth of Times is a magical maze under the guardianship of the Thornose dragons from the line of Therus. Travelers who have permission to enter, journey along shifting corridors that lead to different times—past and future. The labyrinth consists of interlocking circles that manipulate time, and only those granted permission from the dragons can safely navigate the labyrinth’s shifting nature. The Labyrinth also neutralizes all magic, except dragon magic. For this reason, a dark mage by the Name of Kragon Darkmore is carried into the Labyrinth, along with his unholy book of the dark arts and left to die.

The Goldenhorn dragon clan are the sentinels of the Midlands -- the space between times. A quick but dangerous method of time travel, accessible only to those Goldenhorn Dragons and those Drakeborn through them. Goldenhorns are the Sentinels of the Midlands, guiding safe passage. 

Shadowalking is a rare ability tied to the ancient power of the Icewing dragons. Only two humans are born with the potential for this power. They bear a signet resembling a sandglass on their wrist, a birthmark that marks their connection to this ancient power once they become Drake Ascendants. When Shadowalking, they move through time channels as shadows, able to pass through time and solid objects unseen and invisible to others unless they choose to step out of the shadows.  

The last form of time travel in the Dragon's Oath world is Tears in Time. These rifts in the fabric of time come about when a rogue portal is created to allow entry or escape from the Labyrinth of Times. They are dangerous because the dragons cannot sense when or if something comes through a tear. They disrupt the fabric of time, and for those who can see them and have the ability to fly it creates unfettered access to the past and future.

4. Book 4: Rise of the Variel – The Variel steps into her prophetic role as “A human like none other.” Her sacrifice brings the salvation of the dragon race and humanity at great cost. (Beginning the writing process)
5. Book 5: Fragments in Time – A this point this final book of the Dragon’s Oath series is a collection of ideas, notes, and reminders.
